This simple pattern is the very heart and soul of Weaving. As you weave, your reed is going "Under" one piece and "Over" the next. You can think of it like someone on roller-skates "weaving" back and forth between cones.
You'll notice that your reed will have two sides; One side is fibrous and hairy, while the other side is smooth and soft. When laying out the base of your basket, make sure the Hairy side is facing up toward you. When weaving, make sure the Smooth side is always facing outward.
Reed can be very soft, but it can also be stiff and brittle if dry. Make sure you keep a bucket of warm water handy to briefly soak your reed in, and a spray bottle to touch it up as it dries while you weave.
